Justine Stafford & Kevin McGahern Launch ‘The Lovely Show’

Beloved Irish comedians Justine Stafford and Kevin McGahern are launching ‘The Lovely Show’ on HeadStuff Podcasts this week. Episode one is out on Friday the 7th of June. The show is the latest addition to HeadStuff Podcasts (Winners of the Irish Podcast Awards 2023). ‘Basically…with Stefanie Preissner’ Is Back!

Stefanie Preissner is back for a new season of ‘Basically.’ This season Stefanie will be taking all the recent news stories and making sense of them. The season has a fantastic lineup of guests including Neale Richmond, Hugh O’Connell and of course fan favourites Luke O’Neill & Robert Whelan. ‘For Tech’s Sake’ is back for season 3!

We’re in a world surrounded by tech and, in many ways, guided by tech, but how well does the average person understand it?

For Tech’s Sake is back to help listeners become more informed and conscious tech users. Now in its third season, the For Tech’s Sake podcast continues to dispel some of the myths, spin and scaremongering that comes from tech companies and news coverage. Season 3 also has an exciting new look with a new logo designed by Matt Mahon (Digital Director at HeadStuff).

This season of For Tech’s Sake will be the show’s biggest ever, delving under the hood of tech developments to sort the good from the bad and the messy in-between.

“A lot of the coverage and announcements around tech can be bombastic, making everything sound either really impressive or really scary, but we also like to look at the everyday tech that’s perfectly ordinary but also hugely important,” says For Tech’s Sake co-host and creator Elaine Burke. 

“Tech can be incredibly powerful and useful, but it can also be stupid and useless too, and we’re not shy at all about calling it out when it is. We do our best to explain some complex topics and the hope is that people won’t feel too intimidated to then engage with tech on a deeper level,” she added.

As always, this season of For Tech’s Sake will call in experts to help, and listeners can expect many discussions around AI as well as sustainability, connected devices, health-tech, surveillance and even democracy.

“In our first season we spoke to a scientist who is now a UN advisor on AI, and our cybersecurity expert from last season has advised the EU and Europol, so we’ve set the bar high and continue to seek out world-class experts for people to learn from,” said co-host Jenny Darmody. “Watch this space for more exciting guests to come!”

Are You Still Listening?

We are very proud to be teaming up with the incredible organisation, Samaritans Ireland. Their “Still Listening” campaign aims to recruit listening volunteers for their 24-hour telephone support service. We obviously have the ears of loads of great listeners, so we were thrilled to be brought in as partners on this campaign. Our podcasters were also very keen to be involved, so you’ll hear them encouraging their listeners to check out the website listening.ie over the next couple of weeks. 

Samaritans have 13 centres in the Republic of Ireland, which is amazing, but of course, they are always looking for volunteers, and particularly in their Dublin branch.

“Because we never know when a person will summon up the bravery to pick up the phone and call the Samaritans, it’s vital that there’ll always be someone there not just to take that call, but to listen and respond to the person on the other end of the phone with empathy and patience.”

That’s why we (HeadStuff and The Podcast Studios), and our legendary podcasters have teamed up with Samaritans Ireland to find great listeners (you) all over the country. Together we are identifying the places and platforms where people go to listen to other people speaking at length, finding times during those conversations to mention the campaign, and encouraging them to use those skills to help people who want to be heard – who desperately need to be heard – at a difficult or delicate time in their lives. 

And the best thing is you don’t need any qualifications to apply, you don’t need a counselling degree or any previous experience. If you can listen, and be empathetic, you can do this.

Anyone interested in finding out more and/or applying to become a Samaritans Ireland listening volunteer can start their journey at listening.ie.

I would urge you, excellent listener and wonderful person, to volunteer with Samaritans if you have the capacity, or can make the time. It’s worth it, for you, and even more so for the countless people who at one time or another need to pick up the phone and talk to someone like you.
